We had a wonderful time last night at the Member Mixer - Fernwood Botanical Garden with our co-hosts Harbor Country Chamber!

We caught up with Live Buchanan at our May PERC Breakfast, hosted at Roti Roti Art Center - and learned a lot about what they have planned for downtown Buchanan!

…The return of our annual Chili-Walk Cook-Off was a huge success! With over 20 chilis and 300+ attendees, we had great participation despite *chilly* weather. We had many locals support our competitors, but we were also greeted by many guests and first timers who gathered to try out what the people of Buchanan had to offer…

This means their patterns are not replicas but indeed the actual fabric that can be seen being worn by artists like Jimmy Hendrix, John Lennon, and Bob Dylan. Not only does this add to the value and "cool" factor of the products, but it also gives dead stock fabric a new life-- in fact, many lives, as each smaller cut of fabric is repurposed into smaller patterns such as dog collars and belts…

…Since moving to the area nearly 10 years ago, Fernwood has woven itself into my story as well. My husband has given me tours of the grounds recounting the times he has spent exploring the gardens as a child. He credits his love of art and conservation to his time spent in Fernwood's summer camps. His love is contagious and I've found myself treasuring our past, present and future wandering the grounds…

…Making this dream a reality was not without its challenges. Operating their successful family business was already a full time job. Initially, Ulrike found it challenging to balance time between her two businesses. However, she realized that the success of her yoga studio was dependent on her "making the time." Ulrike began by starting a routine of dedicated time to each business and cross-training employees to help reduce her personal responsibilities so that she could dedicate more time to her new business.

This experience has taught her a lot. Her advice to other business owners is to, "Remember why you started. Practice what you preach. Trust the process."…
